Modular LinMot drive solution with integrated functional safety

Modular LinMot drive solution with integrated functional safety

13 October 2025

The modular platform impresses with innovative functionality and easy configuration options and is aimed at overcoming some of the most complex challenges facing modern mechanical engineering companies – compensating for the shortage of qualified personnel, increasing production requirements, increasingly stringent safety regulations and the need for more sustainable processes.

Flexible, compact and highly efficient solution

LinMot’s flexible modular system allows users to combine the brand’s space-optimized linear motors, modules and guides with proven Cartesian designs, such as semi-gantry, portal and other multi-axis configurations. In this way, the solution quickly, precisely and adaptively meets the needs of a variety of standard and specific applications, including those with a high level of complexity.

Despite the integration of multiple carriages and Z axes, LinMot systems remain extremely compact and save valuable space, while being extremely easy to maintain and scale.

Thanks to their mechanics and motion principles, LinMot linear motors, modules and linear guides are not only significantly more energy and cost-effective than other systems with different kinematics, but also prove to be a much more flexible solution in terms of workspace design. Among their distinct advantages are high speed, precision and repeatability in motion control.

All this makes them an excellent choice for scenarios that require equally high positioning accuracy in every stroke. These include sorting, pick-and-place operations and assembly in dynamic modern production, as well as capping, screwing and other activities in the processing of industrial components and products.

The role of functional safety in multi-axis systems

With this innovative and adaptable package solution, LinMot is placing a leading emphasis on safety by functionally integrating it directly into the motor and drive – without changing their proven design.

Thanks to this, both new and existing machine concepts can benefit from the many advantages of the Swiss manufacturer’s key integrated safety technology.

The advantages in brief:

  • All safety monitoring functions are integrated into the -2S servo drives;
  • No additional hardware is required;
  • Standard emergency stop and shutdown functions – Safe Stop (STO) and Safe Shutdown (SS1);
  • Additional advanced safety functions – Safe Stop 2 (SS2), Safe Operation Stop (SOS), Safe Limited Speed (SLS), Safe Brake Control (SBC/SBT);
  • The safe brake control function SBC has been extended with Safe Brake Test (SBT) for cyclic/regular testing;
  • The new LinMot -2S servo drives can communicate with the higher-level control system via: PROFIsafe/PROFINET, PROFIdrive, EtherCAT (FSoE), Ethernet/IP, POWERLINK and SERCOS;
  • Alternatively, safety functions can be integrated via the integrated digital inputs.
