OMRON’s M1 frequency converter series – a flexible and powerful solution with EtherCAT technology

10 July 2024

Omron introduces the reliable and innovative M1 series AC frequency inverters with EtherCAT technology for greater flexibility, efficiency and space saving in machine design.

The frequency regulators of the Japanese manufacturer are distinguished by numerous advantages, including integrated software configuration capabilities.

Functions and features

  • Control of asynchronous and permanent magnet motors in open or closed vector loop (OLV + CLV), 200% torque at 0 Hz;
  • Torque control: in open and closed loop (OLV + CLV) in asynchronous motors; in closed loop (CLV) in permanent magnet motors;
  • Speed and position adjustment functions;
  • Flexible EtherCAT configuration: in Standard and Ring topology;
  • Built-in encoder/pulse counter input;
  • Advanced energy saving features;
  • Integrated M1 STD module for Modbus communication as well as M1 ECT network module for EtherCAT connection;
  • Ability to configure PC via Sysmac Studio IDE software;
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant protective coating of printed circuit boards;
  • Guarantee for 10-year operation in continuous mode without maintenance;
  • Certificates and markings: CE, UKCA, cULus, KC, RCM and RoHS.

Optimized machine design

The built-in EtherCAT module enables seamless integration of the M1 series drives into any EtherCAT network with the potential to save significant engineering costs.

Flexible connectivity

The EtherCAT topology gives freedom in the design of machines, and the Ring architecture contributes to the durability and stability of configurations in production applications.

Wide range of engines

Omron’s M1 series supports: standard induction motors, permanent magnet motors, direct drive permanent magnet motors (with up to 128 poles), as well as special systems such as drum motors.

Their parameters can be automatically configured and adjusted using the “Autotuning” function of the Sysmac Studio software platform.

Advanced functionality

In addition to improved efficiency in assembly and configuration, the M1 series also provides better usability of the solution thanks to the capabilities of programming, tuning, simulation and monitoring with the same software.

Sysmac Studio Drive Edition’s intuitive user interface greatly facilitates the operator’s work by:

.

  • Integrated configuration tool;
  • Setup and adjustment functions;
  • Software consultants;
  • Data monitoring and tracking functions;
  • Test Commissioning Tool;
  • “Autotuning” function for automatic tuning.

Reduced wiring, improved efficiency

EtherCAT technology allows for quick installation and significantly less risk of wiring errors. The compact configuration significantly reduces the size of the control cabinet.

Safety and reliability for production machinery

The models of the series support high safety requirements:

  • Safe Torque Off (STO) function according to ISO 13849-1, Cat. 3/PLe;
  • Systems with FSoE function (Safety over EtherCAT) for functional safety by means of EtherCAT;
  • Safety input module (2CH) and EDM output module for external device monitoring.

Digitization

IoT connectivity is the future of machines. With M1 inverters, data for each device can be collected and visualized both on-site and remotely. Monitoring provides not only information about the current state of the machine, but also a reliable basis for its predictive maintenance.
