Yaskawa U1000 Regenerative Low Harmonic Matrix Converter

Yaskawa U1000 Regenerative Low Harmonic Matrix Converter

08 July 2024

Yaskawa introduces the high-efficiency U1000 AC drive based on the latest generation matrix conversion technology.

With its fully regenerative capabilities, the U1000 matrix converter offers outstanding energy saving potential, at sinusoidal input currents and near-unity power factor.

Thanks to its ultra-compact design, the U1000 is the first and leading choice when designing innovative, energy-efficient drive solutions – with or without energy regeneration.

Innovative matrix technology

  • Active Front-End design without conventional DC bus capacitor in the case;
  • Clean energy – THD-i below 5%;
  • Energy-saving 4Q (4-quadrant) mode of operation – 100% savings in regeneration mode;
  • Easy parameterization from PC with DriveWizard Plus;
  • Ability to create custom software with DriveWorksEZ.

Revolutionary design for low harmonics

The U1000 features a unique and innovative design that surpasses the performance of universal AC drives. This allows the best-in-class matrix converter to not only optimize applications, but also exceed the power quality harmonic recommendations set out in the IEEE 519 standard. The converter thus ensures that your system’s power supply is reliably protected from harmonic pollution.

What’s more, Yaskawa’s U1000 matrix converter is specially designed for demanding applications in harsh and/or aggressive industrial environments. This extremely compact all-in-one solution offers optimal performance in both standard and regenerative modes.

Applications:

  • Approved for use in the marine industry on a global scale;
  • An excellent choice for driving lifting and transport equipment – cranes, elevator mechanisms, etc.;
  • A perfect solution for small power grids;
  • Optimal system for spatially limited areas; and applications
  • Leading choice for escalators and conveyors;
  • Suitable for a wide range of lighting and HVAC applications.

Built-in energy regeneration technology

The most suitable solution for regenerative applications, the U1000 eliminates the need to install external brake modules and resistors. The converter directly returns the regenerated and braking energy back to the power supply.

The compact “AC to AC” converter does not include a DC bus. This allows it to function without a braking resistor, which would normally waste the energy available for regeneration as heat.

It can now be used by other consumers in the same network, helping to reduce overall electricity consumption and costs while reducing system cooling requirements.

Eco mode – built-in bypass function

Whenever an application matches the grid frequency, the converter can synchronize the motor to the grid frequency. Built-in bypass function eliminates switching losses. In addition, it virtually eliminates current harmonic distortion, significantly reducing motor noise levels.

Multiple benefits in one solution

The leading design advantages of the U1000 compared to conventional dynamic braking solutions include up to 50% savings in installation space, significantly less weight and 100% savings in traditionally wasted energy. And here are the benefits in a nutshell:

  • Exceptional energy saving options;
  • Less amount of waste heat generated, reduced cooling requirements;
  • No braking resistor – lower fire risk;
  • Simplified wiring and connection;
  • Ease of maintenance;
  • Fewer components;
  • Compact design, less installation space;
  • Easy and fast installation;
  • Easy implementation into existing systems as a retrofit solution;
  • TÜV certified in accordance with EN/ISO 13849-1 (PL-e), IEC 62061 (SIL3);
  • Improved reliability;
  • Built-in machine safety function – two-channel Safe Torque Off (STO) function that complies with SIL3 and PL-e classes.
